Flora Fong García

Education and Professional Experience

She concludes her middle level studies at the Provincial School of Plastic Arts of Camagüey, in the specialty of Painting. In 1966 she continued her studies at the National School of Art of Cubanacán, in Havana, where she graduated in 1970. From that year and until 1989 she was a professor at San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts.
She is a member of the Association of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and of the International Association of Plastic Artists (AIAP).

She has illustrated different Cuban and foreign publications; she designed the cover of Marta Roja’s novel El Columpio del Rey Spencer (King Spencer’s Swing) published in Chile in 1993; she also illustrated the book  Junto al Alamo (By the Poplar of the Mockingbirds), by Cuban writer Emilio de Armas, which obtained the Prize of Casa de las Américas.

Works in public locations

In 1997 Flora Fong designed a stained glass piece of 150 x 600 cm. for the piano bar of restaurant El Pedregal, in the Cuban capital.
In 1999 she made a sculpture that was set up in Varadero Beach, in front of  Hotel “Taíno 5”.
In 2002 she created a ceramic mural for the primary school “Cesáreo Fernández” in the municipality of Playa, in Havana.
In 2004, one of her sculptures was set up at the University of Informatic Sciences in Havana, Cuba.

In addition to painting and drawing, Flora Fong has engaged in ceramics, stained glass, the design of fabrics in the Telarte project and in making kites with the Oriental technique. During the Fifth Havana Biennial she conducted a kite workshop with collaboration of two Chinese specialists.
In 1978 she represented Cuba in the International Meeting of Painters in Lithuania. She traveled to China in a cultural exchange mission in 1989. She has also visited numerous other countries like the United States, Germany, Russia, Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Italy, France and Japan, among others.
During the celebration in Panama of the Third Panamanian-Cuban Cultural Meeting in 1984 she gave a number of chats and didactic conferences on Cuban art.
In 1995 she took part in an international project for the creation of a group mural, together with six Spanish painters, in Hotel Nacional de Cuba, in Havana.

Awards and Residencies

The Council of State of the Republic of Cuba granted her the Distinction for National Culture in 1988 and the Distinction “23 de agosto”, of the Cuban Women’s Federation, in 1989.

Her works are in many private and state collections in Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Chile, the United States of America, Spain, France, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, China, Greece, South Korea and Japan, among other countries.

Publications

En 1993, Alejandro Gil directed the art video Nube de Otoño (Autumn Cloud) on Flora Fong’s life and work.
